Bariatric Evaluation

Psychological evaluations to support safe, informed, and successful bariatric surgery outcomes.

Bariatric evaluations are often required prior to weight-loss surgery to assess psychological readiness, identify potential risk factors, and support long-term success. These evaluations are not about “passing” or “failing,” but about ensuring patients are fully prepared for the physical and psychological changes that come with surgery.

What this evaluation looks at

A bariatric evaluation considers a range of psychological, behavioral, and lifestyle factors that may influence surgical outcomes. This may include eating behaviors, emotional functioning, coping strategies, and readiness for long-term lifestyle changes.

  • Eating patterns and relationship with food
  • History of weight management efforts
  • Mood, anxiety, or other mental health concerns
  • Coping strategies and stress management
  • Understanding of the procedure and expectations
  • Readiness for post-surgical lifestyle changes

A supportive, non-judgmental process

The goal of a bariatric evaluation is to provide clarity and support—not to act as a barrier. When concerns are identified, they are approached collaboratively, with recommendations designed to improve readiness and long-term outcomes.

In many cases, the evaluation can help identify strengths that will support success, as well as areas where additional preparation or support may be helpful before or after surgery.

Who this is for

This service is typically for individuals who are preparing for bariatric surgery and have been referred by a physician, surgeon, or medical program. It may also be helpful for individuals considering surgery who want a clearer understanding of psychological readiness before moving forward.
